Our Beliefs
Since its inception, God’s Spirit has enlivened the Methodist movement. In the 1720s John and Charles Wesley and friends at Oxford University met together to deepen their Christian faith through daily, practical spiritual disciplines. Derided by others as a “new sect of Methodists” for their “methodical” ways of practicing the faith and holding one another accountable to it, the small group embraced the insult and persevered in their fellowship. And so they and the millions who followed after them have ever since been known as “the people called Methodists.”
As Methodists, we share the unique theological emphasis of the Wesleyan Tradition. Further, we value the contributions of all Christian faith traditions and celebrate our unity of faith in Jesus Christ. At First Methodist Seymour, we affirm the historic beliefs of Christianity, as expressed through the Apostles’ and Nicene Creeds. We believe that God’s love has been poured out to all creation through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and that we can experience the grace and presence of God in our world today through the Holy Spirit. We value Scripture as God’s holy and inspired word to humanity, and trust that through prayerful reading, reflection and discussion, God will speak to our deepest questions and needs in life.

God desires to work in your life in powerful ways, and we feel privileged to be a community of faith in which God’s grace can be experienced and lived out in the world.

Jay is an ordained Elder in the Global Methodist Church. He has been serving in the church his entire adult life, from a volunteer youth minister during his college years, to full time youth ministry and now pastoral ministry. Jay has also served as a coach and teacher in several local school districts. “I am passionate about “doing” the gospel, not just proclaiming it. Our actions do speak louder than words and Jesus was adamant that we produce fruit for the kingdom.”
